Four chalkboard walls and a picnic table built in. It is a shop one week, a school the next, and on the afternoons when nobody can agree on what it is, it is simply somewhere to sit outside with a snack.

In everyday use

It goes on a patio or a lawn and becomes the default destination. The chalkboard walls are the reason it does not get boring — signs get rewritten, prices change, the whole building gets redecorated in an afternoon and wiped down the next morning. Inside, the built-in table and benches seat two to four children, so it works for a playdate rather than one child at a time. The large window and half-door mean you can see in from the kitchen.

The edit

Playhouses fail by being finished — there is one thing to do inside and it gets done. Chalkboard walls make it unfinished on purpose: the house is never the same twice, and the redecorating is itself the game. Adding a table means it also works as somewhere to eat, draw and sit, which is what turns it from a toy into a part of the garden. In black and natural wood, it looks like it belongs on a patio rather than in a catalogue.
